mac-guys.jpgI, for the most part, always hated the Mac commercials, and I am a hardcore Mac user. Well, as I stated in that post, I felt that the Mac Guy makes “Windows users look dumb and like victims.” I personally thought the message did get across but it was a low blow to PC/Windows users.

Last night I saw an article on Radar Online named Apple Ditches ‘Mac Guy’ In New Ads. So the Mac guy won’t be in the future “I’m a Mac” campaign. Why?

Perhaps for striking people as a “smug little twit,” in the words of Seth Stevenson, ad critic for Slate. Long, he adds, is “just the sort of unshaven, hoodie-wearing, hands-in-pockets hipster we’ve always imagined when picturing a Mac enthusiast…. It’s like Apple is parodying its own image while also cementing it.”

So long Mac Guy.

The only reason I started with a PC in the first place was because me and all my art school friends were broke, unshaven, hoodie-wearing, hands-in-pockets, hipsters, who were too poor to afford a Mac. It’s not the case now, but old habits are hard to break.

The smug Mac Guy reminds me of some rich kids I knew from school that everyone hated. (Always showing off expensive toys but no talent.) You know… The guys with expensive guitars who can’t play, etc.

Stereotyping your target audience as a bunch of dorks in cheap suits might not work in the long run.

The smug little twit claims that he will be doing more spots on his Blog!

As for the Mac commercials, I don’t know where that report came from that said I wasn’t going to do it anymore – I’m literally setting my alarm right now to wake up for a Mac shoot tomorrow -we’re doing some holiday spots now which I think will be pretty funny. They’re easy to do, I love John (the pc guy) and working with him is so effortless and fun that I definitely wouldn’t rule out doing some more.
